Nightclub & Bar Review
Tresor’s impact on the global Techno / Electronic scene cannot be underestimated - ever since arriving in post-Wall Berlin it set the standard, defined the style and spread the music, and it’s still going as strong as ever with massive weekly club nights, a killer sound-system and dedicated crowds. From the late 80’s UFO Club through to the classic Wertheim department store venue, the club has been around for 20 years in one form or another, moving into a new space in Köpenicker Strasse in 2007 yet retaining the vibe that has made it a nightclub legend.
Looks-wise, Tresor laid down the blueprint for Berghain - it’s housed in an old power-plant (actually owned by the same company that owns the Berghain site), and the downstairs club (known as Tresor) boasts a brutal design throughout a vast concrete landscape, with chunks of rough brick and sturdy metal, lending it a dystopian / sci-fi atmosphere that melds perfectly with the pounding Techno and Tech-House. Upstairs in Batterieraum the looks are less ominous but the atmosphere is still powerful, and there’s room for a good 1500 or so clubbers in here. Finally, +4Bar offers a lounge area and a place to chill out along with some good views of the dilapidated factory ruins. Very cool.
Tresor is all about Electronic, with styles ranging from pure Techno through to Electro, Tech-house and House on the weekends, with Disco, Deep House and Breakbeats also making an appearance throughout the week, starting with the classic Bonito House Club on Wednesday’s. The soundsystem is crazy - Tresor redefines loud, and the sub is just ridiculous. The kicks and bass terrorize the area, with a visceral thump you can feel in your chest. If this is your kind of music (and honestly why would you come here if you don’t love Techno?) then you’ll be in heaven, as the raw industrial sounds and style combine to make this a memorable experience.
Entry prices are more than reasonable, and it ranges from around 7 Euros Wednesday to around 15 on the massive Saturday club nights. Drinks are also reasonable, on average with most clubs in Berlin at around 3 - 5 Euros for beers and around 7 for mixed. Tresor doesn’t get going until midnight, and you can expect a massive line out the front - although not as notoriously difficult to get into as Berghain or even Watergate, it can still be a bit of a challenge, especially if you don’t fit the ‘look’. If you don’t speak German, try to be polite and without too much attitude - trust us it goes a long way.
All in all Tresor is straight Berlin - moody and alternative, unpretentious and deep. The music is loud and powerful, the atmosphere is epic and once inside you’ll be swallowed up by the vibe.
