Nightclub & Bar Review
The Nest is a smashing new music and urban-art club in Dalston from a group of nightlife champions including one of the founders of the almighty Fabric. With a firm focus on the best in up-and-coming new music, a cool vibe and cheeky style, the basement-level club is fitted out with a ridiculously good Martin Audio soundsystem and brings in a constant stream of Next Big Things.
The team here have done a lot of tweaking of the sound to make sure that it's crisp yet powerful in a small space, and the clarity is really special. Located where Barden’s Boudoir used to be, they've done a big refurb and kitted the space out with an edgy mix of rough textures, exposed pipes and neon lights as well as op-shop lounges and cool little touches like red-light district adverts on the walls. Little alcoves with leather stools sit opposite a lengthy bar and the ceilings are low and give the club a moody vibe. The dancefloor is pretty small but gets great coverage from the soundsystem which puts it up with the likes of Plastic People in terms of great sound in a small spot.
The Nest is also a great counterpoint to all of the over-the-top A-list clubs that dominate London’s scene, and just like XOYO and Cable, it holds up a torch to those that want good, solid music and up-for-it crowds that couldn’t care less about designer brands. The drinks here are surprisingly good, with a nice selection of beers that aren’t too pricey as well as a reasonable selection of cocktails, which is a nice addition to this kind of club.
The Nest is straight-forward and does what it aims to do with flying colours - they support the local art and music scene, the sound is top-notch and the atmosphere is wild. Oh - and did I mention that it's always free to get in before 10pm and £5 afterwards? This is definitely one of the new breed to watch in London’s club scene.
