Nightclub & Bar Review
Tucked away on a side-street in London’s nightlife hot-zone of Shoreditch, XOYO is a super-vibrant club that does cutting-edge art and music in a large converted warehouse. Set over 2-levels, with a capacity of around 800 - including a gallery and studio - much like Lo-Fi in Sydney - the team here have put a heavy focus on the best in D’n’B, Dubstep, Electro, Techno and House as well as all kinds of top-notch Indie.
The interior of the club isn’t ground-breaking but it’s excellent for the energy and vibe it aims to bring, with large ceilings and exposed vents, hardwood floors and painted girders. There’s so much happening inside the venue that it feels like a blank canvas for a riot of sound and colour, keeping it simple definitely works in this case. Visitors from New York might also notice a similar theme to Santos Party House, so if you like that kind of club you'll definitely dig XOYO. That being said, it can get really packed-out and the layout of the club means that sometimes just getting from one side of the room to the other is an epic journey!
There’s a constant stream of events bringing in big crowds virtually non-stop, and the crowd is cool and enthusiastic so XOYO always has an upbeat vibe. On the busy nights a wave of clubbers can be seen bustling about out the front, vibrating with anticipation and champing at the bit to jump inside and start the party. You’ll find a pretty good mix of people in their late teens & early 20’s, from Shoreditch locals through to London hipsters and the urban crews, alongside a whole bunch of fluro-kids, ironic haircuts and knitted sweaters.
Music-wise XOYO really stands out from its clubbing brethren - Live music and DJs switch up spots on an almost nightly basis, and the music-programming is a real treat, which is what turns a good nightclub into a great one IMO. The headline acts are usually of the kind that will go completely over the heads of the mainstream, but for followers of a particular genre / scene, you can be sure that the cream of the crop are going to be hitting this place at some point. Add in that eclectic mix of art and sound and you've got a real banger on your hands here.
The drinks are pretty basic, with the standard set of well-priced beers at around £4 a pop as well as spirits and cocktails - although good luck keeping 'em in your glass on a big night here! If you dig fresh music and urban art, a back-to-basic clubbing style and up-for-it crowds, XOYO should do the trick...
